Term 2 here I come!!!!

Term 1 is officially over now that grades have been released. There is so much that I can say about my journey to medicine. I am so thankful to have FINALLY successfully completed my first term of medical school. I am so thankful for all the people that I have met along the way as well. I have met so many other medical students and premeds through my med school instagram. It is so nice to have that extra support system. I'm so thankful to SGU for this opportunity. Having to do medical school online in the midst of a pandemic is no easy task. It tried me daily and made me question my intelligence so many times. 

There is SO much studying that has to be done on a daily basis. I'm not going to lie to you-it can be very overwhelming at times. You have to have a plan for each day-whether it be a to do list or an hourly schedule or the volume will lose you. We have ~10 "live" lectures on zoom a week but then in addition to that we have variable amounts of directed learning activities (DLA's) that we have to learn on our own as additional lectures. We also have small groups and labs as well. Every week we have weekly quizzes over the material. 

So many people dropped out of the term or are having to repeat. I just want to be a source of encouragement for you all that may have to repeat the term-I know what it feels like to not get promoted because of a fraction of a percentage point. Just keep going. What is for you will NOT pass you by. Sometimes we try to do things on our time but there is a lesson to be learned that you can't rush things. When the time is right, you will know because everything will fall into place. Trust your process as it may not look like the next person's. Be willing to adapt and change. There is always something that you can do better. Don't compare yourself to anyone but you!! I'm so excited to start Term 2 next semester and finish out my first year of medical school. We will have a virtual white coat ceremony next semester as well. I CANNOT WAIT TO WEAR MY WHITE COAT!!!! I have been waiting for this moment for YEARS. I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and I'll be back with new posts for term 2!

Alright so the final grades are in. If you got what you wanted, congratulations I'm so happy for you 🎉🎉 and if you didn't I'm still proud of you too ❤️. Term 4 is a beast and congratulations to us all for sticking it out.  As you all know, I failed T4 the first time but I came back with a vengeance. I realized that all along I was not studying in a way that was efficient for me. Once I switched my methods this term, everything changed. I realized that making concept maps 1000000% is the way that I learn best. I am excited to carry this with me into T5. If you have found that your study strategies aren't working for you and you aren't seeing the grades that you want I advise you to consider your method. It's not you, it's your method. New Beginnings

Hey y'all! My name is Candace and I'm an incoming 1st year Medical Student. I am absolutely ELATED that this is finally happening. My childhood dreams are finally coming true. My journey to medicine has been far from traditional but I wouldn't change a thing. I recently graduated with my Masters Degree in Biomedical Sciences from Barry University. All of the hardships I have experienced in the last 3 years have molded me into a stronger woman who is ready to conquer whatever challenges may come my way. It has been far from easy but I try my best to take it all in stride. I am looking forward to all the things I will experience over these next 4 years! Week 4 of Medical School is now Complete :)

 Hey y'all, My 4th week of medical school is officially done. I had my first exam at the beginning of the week. There are a lot of adjustments to be made during the first few weeks of school. I quickly learned that some of the things I did for grad school I can't do here because there simply isn't time. I would listen to lectures over and over in grad school. I can't do that here because we are getting like 18-20 lectures a week between the online classes and the prerecorded ones called DLA's that we have to do on our own. I also have peer learning groups that I am required to attend each week as well in addition to my small groups. The volume can be overwhelming but that is why time management is key. I plan out every moment of my day from when I wake up until when I go to bed. This includes everything literally when I'm going to eat, take breaks, exercise, you name it!
